Welcome to the Georgia GuardDawg, University of Georgia's Conservative voice. The GuardDawg strives for excellence in journalism and conservative thought, and is the voice of the silent majority on campus.
The Georgia GuardDawg is an independent journal of news and opinion for the University of Georgia community. It was founded on July 15, 2003 by a group of students dedicated to providing a forum for free expression of conservative ideals and philosophy on campus. At a college dominated politically and intellectually by radical, outspoken, leftist organizations, we have an obligation to balance the dialogue with conservative viewpoints. Our hope is to enable UGA students to hear both sides of the story through a publication that combines humor, opinion, news and feature articles. The Georgia GuardDawg defends three interrelated aspects of our heritage. In these three ways we stand politically, economically and socially conservative. LIMITED GOVERNMENT Because people are naturally fallible and sinful, we cannot rest our hope in any one person or branch of government. Separation of powers and defined limits to government power are crucial elements of our Constitution, and must be defended at all costs.
"A government big enough to supply you with everything you need is a government big enough to take away everything that you have.... The course of history shows that as the government grows, liberty decreases." - Thomas Jefferson ECONOMIC FREEDOM Humans are unwilling to work for the good of the whole, and only economies based on principled self-interest assume a realistic view of humanity. Market economies largely free from government intervention are by nature the most efficient ways to allocate resources.
"Freedom in economic arrangements is itself a component of freedom broadly understood, so economic freedom is an end in itself ... Economic freedom is also an indispensable means toward the achievement of political freedom." - Milton Friedman TRADITIONAL FAMILY VALUES The principle foundation of civil society is in the faith of its citizens. If we destroy the Judeo-Christian ethical foundation on which our Republic is built, we risk losing the rights and the freedoms that these great faiths have bestowed on us.
"Freedom sees religion as the companion of its struggles and triumphs, the cradle of its infancy, and the divine source of its rights. Religion is considered as the guardian of mores, and mores are regarded as the guarantee of the laws and pledge for the maintenance of freedom itself." - Alexis de Tocqueville |
